It will also be the third time to be held in the southern hemisphere, after Melbourne 1956 and Sydney 2000.
The event will take place between 5 and 21 August 2016, and Paralimpíadas will be between 7 and 18 September of the same year. The place of the opening and closing ceremonies will be at Maracana Stadium. 28 sports will be played, two more than in the Summer Olympics 2012. The IOC Executive Committee suggested the inclusion of rugby sevens and golf, and were approved during the 121st Session. The program of the Games can be expanded even after the success of new modalities included in the first Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore in 2010.
